The La Cuenta Project

San Diego, Ca

This full home remodel in San Diego is one of the boldest and most dramatic transformations in the Vance Design portfolio. The project expanded the home's footprint with a new living room addition over the garage while simultaneously reimagining the entire interior with a sophisticated dark modern organic aesthetic that is equal parts striking and livable.

The kitchen is the undeniable heart of the home and a true showstopper. Charcoal grey shaker cabinetry wraps the perimeter and island while a custom natural wood range hood serves as the sculptural focal point of the space. A full-height dark vertically stacked tile backsplash adds rich texture and depth behind the professional range, while dramatic book-matched marble slab countertops and waterfall island edges bring a luxurious material contrast that anchors the entire room. Oversized matte black dome pendant lights hang in multiples above the expansive island, which seats a full row of wood and leather slatted bar stools. Brushed gold fixtures and hardware warm the palette and add refinement throughout.

The open layout connects the kitchen seamlessly to the new living addition, where a curved wood occasional table, a generous cloud sectional, and a view to the second floor landing above create a space with real architectural drama. The two-story volume of the addition introduces light and scale that completely transforms the feel of the home, making it function and live far beyond its original footprint.

Throughout the project, the design stays committed to its material story of charcoal, warm wood, brushed gold, and white marble, a combination that feels current without being trendy and elevated without being cold.
