The Challenge Project

La Mesa, Ca

This whole home remodel in the coveted Mt. Helix neighborhood of La Mesa, CA is a stunning transformation that honors the architectural charm of the original home while bringing it fully into the modern era. Designed by Vance Design Studio, the project reimagines every main living space with a crisp, high-contrast aesthetic grounded in black, white, and warm natural wood — a timeless palette that feels both fresh and rooted in the home's craftsman character.

The kitchen was redesigned from the ground up with white shaker cabinetry, classic subway tile, floating wood shelves, and a bold matte black faucet and hardware finish. Stainless appliances and a dramatic dark range anchor the space with contrast while quartz countertops keep everything clean and bright. Black steel casement windows flood the room with natural light and connect the interior to the lush hillside surroundings that define the Mt. Helix area.

In the dining and living areas, the design leans into the home's high ceilings and original bones. A statement wrought iron cube chandelier draws the eye up in the dining space, while a chunky dark wood farm table paired with wishbone chairs creates a grounded, editorial moment. The living room flows openly with a built-in media wall, a plush cloud sofa, and layered textures that make the space feel collected and intentional without being overdone.
